Seventy thousand people have waited years for this. The United States plays its first home World Cup match since the Silverdome in 1994 — against a Paraguay side that beat Brazil and Argentina in qualifying, and is currently missing its most dangerous attacker.
The pressure is real
Pochettino's last four games: three defeats (Germany, Portugal, Belgium) and a 3-2 win over Senegal. The shape is built, the relationships are in place, and SoFi Stadium will be loud and expectant. There is no soft landing if this goes wrong. 1

USA's setup
Pochettino will likely line up in a 3-4-2-1 that functions closer to a 4-2-3-1 in practice: Freese in goal; Freeman, Richards (ankle doubt), Ream across the back; Dest operating as a winger rather than a wingback; Tyler Adams anchoring the middle alongside McKennie; Malik Tillman — five chances created in two pre-tournament friendlies — just behind; Pulisic and Balogun supporting Weah up front. 3 4
Paraguay's threat
Gustavo Alfaro's 4-4-2 compact mid-block produced seven clean sheets in their final 12 qualifiers. They won't press — they'll sit, absorb, and try to hurt the USA on the break through Almirón and Sanabria. The blow: Julio Enciso (Strasbourg), their one genuine match-winner, is a serious doubt with the muscle injury he picked up on June 6. Without his creativity, Paraguay become more predictable. 1

One matchup to watch
Pulisic and Dest against Paraguay's right-side block. Every Robinson run down the left creates a pull in that direction; the Pulisic/Dest combination on the other side is where the USA will look to carve the first real opening. If Paraguay's shape holds to the 70th minute, this gets tense. If Tillman finds a seam in the half-space before that, it doesn't.
Quote of the Day
"The weight of being a host nation is something you can either embrace or let crush you. We've decided to embrace it."— Mauricio Pochettino, pre-match press conference, June 10 1
